[Continued from the previous page] Kinmori resigned from the position of Daijō-daijin (Grand Minister of State). In the eleventh month, Nijō Regent Kanemoto was appointed Daijō-daijin. In the twelfth month, Kinhira resigned from the position of Nafu (Minister of the Center). The former Nafu Tokudaiji Kintaka was appointed Ufu (Minister of the Right).
In this same year (the first year of Shōan, 1299), the Zen monk Issan (Yishan Yining) came to Japan from the court of Yuan (China). This was because he had received a secret imperial edict from the king of that country and was sent as a spy to Japan. Hōjō Sadatoki discerned this, captured Issan, and exiled him to Izu. He was subsequently pardoned, but Issan did not return to his home country; instead, he remained in Japan, spread the teachings of Zen Buddhism, and became the abbot (住持, jūji) of Nanzen-ji. Among the Zen monks who came to Japan around this time, there were likely many others of Issan's kind.
In the second year [of Shōan] (1300), first month, the Emperor underwent his coming-of-age ceremony (genpuku). Regent Kanemoto presided over the crowning ritual (kakan). In the fourth month, Kanemoto resigned from the position of Daijō-daijin. In the seventh month, Hōjō Sanemasa was appointed Chinzei Tandai (Military Commissioner of the Western Provinces) and departed for Kyushu. He was the fifth-generation descendant of (Hōjō) Yoshitoki. In the eleventh month, Hōjō Munekata returned from Rokuhara to Kamakura. In the twelfth month, Kanemoto [resigned from the regency; the text continues on the next page].
