六月、大納言藤原冬氏が内大臣となった。
同月、天皇が諸臣を召して、五経・三史についての論議が行われた。この頃、後宇多法皇は大納言藤原定房を関東へ遣わされ、政務を当今（現天皇）に任せて、閑居なさりたいと仰せになった。武家も異議なきことによって、（法皇は）大覚寺へ隠居された。
八月、左大臣実泰・内大臣冬氏が官を辞した。九条の右府房実が左（大臣）に転じ、今出川の大納言藤原兼季が右府（右大臣）に転じた。鷹司の大納言冬教が内府（内大臣）に任じられた。兼季は西園寺実兼の末子である。その庭に菊があったことから、「菊庭」と号した。後にこれを改めて「菊亭」と称したと伝えられている。
同月、東福寺の師錬が『元亨釈書』を（天皇に）奉った。師錬は虎関と号する。
九月、西園寺の前関白・相国実兼が薨去した。享年七十四歳。

In the sixth month, Dainagon (Major Counselor) Fujiwara no Fuyuji was appointed Naidaijin (Minister of the Center).
In the same month, the Emperor summoned his officials, and a scholarly debate was held on the Five Classics and Three Histories. Around this time, the Retired Emperor Go-Uda (in holy orders) sent Dainagon Fujiwara no Sadafusa to the eastern provinces (Kamakura), and declared his wish to retire to a quiet life, entrusting governance to the reigning Emperor. As the warrior government (bakufu) raised no objection, the Retired Emperor withdrew to Daikakuji.
In the eighth month, the Minister of the Left Saneyasu and the Naidaijin Fuyuji resigned their offices. Fujiwara no Fusazane of the Kujō house was transferred from the position of Ufu (Minister of the Right) to that of the left, and Dainagon Fujiwara no Kanesue of Imadegawa was transferred to Ufu (Minister of the Right). Dainagon Noriyoshi of the Takatsukasa house was appointed Naifū (Naidaijin, Minister of the Center). Kanesue was the youngest son of Saionji Sanekane. Because there were chrysanthemums (kiku) in his garden, he took the name "Kikutei" (Chrysanthemum Garden). It is said that this was later amended and called "Kikutei" (Chrysanthemum Arbor).
In the same month, Shiren of Tōfukuji presented the Genkō Shakusho to the Emperor. Shiren is known by the name Kokan.
In the ninth month, the former Regent and Chancellor (Shōkoku) Saionji Sanekane passed away. He was seventy-four years of age.
