In the same month, the warrior monks of Mount Hiei, responding to the wishes of Prince Moriyoshi, raised arms and attacked the capital. They engaged the warriors of Rokuhara in battle, but the mountain monks were defeated. The Retired Emperor (Go-Daigo), from Mount Funakami, sent Chigusa Chūjō Tadaaki at the head of troops to attack the capital. They fought against Rokuhara, but Tadaaki found no advantage in the battle. In the same month, Hōjō Takatoki appointed his kinsman Nagoshi, the Governor of Owari, Takauji (Takake), as commander-in-chief, and Ashikaga Jibu no Taifu Takauji as deputy commander, and ordered them to march on the capital. As Nagasaki Engki was suspicious of Takauji, Takauji made use of his younger brother Tadayoshi's stratagem and presented a written oath, which caused Takatoki to cease his suspicions.
