Tokimasu was struck by a stray arrow and died. When they reached Banba in Ōmi Province, the enemy had already blocked the road, and so Nakatoki and all his followers committed suicide. The new emperor and both retired emperors were captured and returned to the capital. The besieging forces at Chihaya Castle also withdrew and retreated to the Southern Capital (Nara). On the eighth day of the same month, Nitta Yoshisada raised a righteous army in Kōzuke Province and attacked Kamakura. Takatoki had his brother Eshō and others hold them off. Several battles were fought in Musashi Province. As the Kantō forces all turned against Takatoki, Eshō was ultimately defeated and returned to Kamakura. Yoshisada then pressed his attack and entered Kamakura. Hōjō Tokitomo and Hōjō Motoki committed suicide. Tokitomo was the grandson of Nagatoki and was known by the name Akahashi. The wife of Takauji (Ashikaga Takauji) was Tokitomo's younger sister. Motoki was the Rokuhara (deputy Naka-)... [Page ends here — continues on next page]
