[Continued from the previous page] However, His Majesty would not permit this. Takauji, fearing for his life, bribed Fujiwara no Renshi, the stepmother of Prince Moriyoshi and a Lady of the Junior Consort rank (Jugo), and thus managed to escape the threat.
In the seventh month, several generals of the besieging force at Chihayajō surrendered and were all executed.
In the eighth month, Takauji was awarded the Junior Third Rank (Jushii) and appointed Governor of Musashi (Musashi no Kami). He was also granted the character "Taka" (尊) from the Emperor's own name, and thereupon changed his name from Takauji (高氏) to Takauji (尊氏). His Majesty had already begun implementing a government unified under court (Kuge) rule; however, owing to the influence of favored intimates such as the Lady Renshi, rewards and punishments were not administered justly. As a result, the hearts of the people throughout the realm turned instead toward the warrior houses (Buke). Middle Counselor (Chūnagon) Fujifusa repeatedly remonstrated with His Majesty, but His Majesty would not heed him.
In the tenth month, Kitabatake Sangi (Consultant) Minamoto no Akiie was appointed Provincial Governor (Kokushi) of Mutsu and departed the capital for his post. Both the provinces of Dewa and Mutsu submitted to his authority.
In the first month of Kenmu 1 (1334), Takauji was elevated to the Senior Third Rank (Shōsanmi). In the same month, construction work began on the Great Imperial Palace (Daidairi).
In the second month, Minamoto no Nagateru resigned from the position of Minister of the Right. Konoe Tsunetada was reappointed as Minister of the Right (Ufu).
In the spring of the same year, Takauji was granted (the province of) Musashi...
