二月、主上は叡山より還幸された。この度も正成はさまざまな奇策を巡らせて功を立てた。同月、義貞・顕家・正成らが尊氏を追いかけ、摂州豊島にて合戦となり、尊氏は敗れて筑紫へ落ち延びた。義貞は帰洛し、左中将に任じられた。菊池武俊は九州の兵を催して尊氏を攻め、筑前の多々良浜にて合戦となったが、菊池は敗れ、九州は尊氏に帰属した。この時、義貞は匂当内侍という美女に心を惑わされ、西国への下向が遅れている間に、赤松円心をはじめ西国の兵はみな尊氏になびいた。
三月、顕家は中納言に昇進し、鎮守府将軍に任じられて、再び奥州へ下向した。義貞は山陽・山陰十六か国の官領を許され、西国へ下向し、まず播州の赤松の城を攻めた。

In the second month, the Emperor returned from Mount Hiei (Eisan). Once again, Masashige (Kusunoki Masashige) devised various clever stratagems and distinguished himself with meritorious deeds. In the same month, Yoshisada (Nitta Yoshisada), Akiie (Kitabatake Akiie), Masashige, and others pursued Takauji (Ashikaga Takauji), and a battle took place at Teshima in Sesshū Province. Takauji was defeated and fled to Tsukushi (Kyushu). Yoshisada returned to the capital and was appointed as Middle Captain of the Left (Saちゅūjō). Kikuchi Taketoshi raised troops from Kyushu and attacked Takauji, and a battle was fought at Tatara-no-hama in Chikuzen Province. Kikuchi was defeated, and Kyushu came under Takauji's control. Yoshisada was granted the governorship (kanryō) of the sixteen provinces of the San'yō and San'in regions and headed west, first attacking the castle of Akamatsu in Harima Province.
In the fourth month, the Retired Emperor Go-Fushimi passed away at the age of forty-nine. Before his death, he had secretly bestowed an imperial decree (inzen) upon Takauji.
