同月、尊氏と直義は大軍を率いて筑紫を出発した。五月、義貞は退いて兵庫に陣を構えた。正成に勅命が下り、義貞を援けるよう命じられた。正成は策略を献じたが、御許容がなかったため、兵庫へ赴いて義貞に加わり、尊氏と合戦した。正成は湊川にて討ち死にし、義貞は敗北して帰洛した。主上は再び叡山へ行幸され、尊氏は入洛して、花園上皇を東寺へ請じ、持明院方の皇統を立てようとした。
六月、尊氏は高師重らを遣わして叡山を攻めさせたが、攻め手は敗れ、師重は生け捕りとなった。
七月、義貞は数度にわたって出京して合戦したが、毎度官軍は利を得られなかった。那和長年が討ち死にした。義貞は自ら東寺へ押し寄せ、尊氏と一騎討ちで勝負を決しようとした。尊氏はこれに応じず、義貞は怒って山へ帰った。
八月、光厳上皇の弟、豊仁が、尊氏の計らいによって京都に〔即位することとなった〕。

In the same month (the fourth month), Takauji (Ashikaga Takauji) and Tadayoshi (Ashikaga Tadayoshi) set out from Tsukushi at the head of a great army. In the fifth month, Yoshisada (Nitta Yoshisada) fell back and encamped at Hyōgo. An imperial decree was issued to Masashige (Kusunoki Masashige), commanding him to go to Yoshisada's aid. Although Masashige submitted a plan of strategy, it was not accepted, and so he proceeded to Hyōgo, joined forces with Yoshisada, and gave battle against Takauji. Masashige died in combat at the Minatogawa River, and Yoshisada was defeated and returned to the capital. The Emperor once again proceeded to Mount Hiei (Eisan), and Takauji entered the capital. He summoned the Retired Emperor Hanazono to Tōji Temple and sought to establish the imperial line of the Jimyōin-tō (the Northern Court faction).
In the sixth month, Takauji dispatched Kō no Moroshige and others to attack Mount Hiei, but the attacking force was defeated, and Moroshige was taken prisoner.
In the seventh month, although Yoshisada sortied from the capital several times to give battle, the imperial forces gained no advantage on each occasion. Nawa Nagatoshi died in battle. Yoshisada himself advanced on Tōji Temple and challenged Takauji to decide the outcome in single combat. Takauji refused, and Yoshisada, in anger, returned to the mountain.
In the eighth month, Toyohito, the younger brother of the Retired Emperor Kōgon, was, by Takauji's arrangement, [enthroned] in the capital.
