即位され、建武の年号を用いられた。近衛左府経忠が関白となった。
十月、主上（後醍醐天皇）は東宮・恒良親王を義貞（新田義貞）に附託し、北国へ赴かせた。主上は尊氏（足利尊氏）に欺かれ、都へ出ようとされたところを、花山院に押し込め奉った。足利高経・高師泰らを北国へ遣わし、義貞が籠る越前の金ケ崎城を攻めさせた。
十一月、尊氏は大納言に任じられた。建武式目十七ヶ条を定めた。天下はまた武家の代となった。
十二月、主上（後醍醐天皇）は密かに都を逃げ出て、吉野へ遷幸された。楠木正成の子・正行が参じて守護し奉った。旧臣たちも来たって従い奉った。ある説によれば、吉野への臨幸は今年八月のことであるともいわれている。これより吉野を南朝と号して、帝王が二人おわします〔こととなった〕。

In the tenth month, the Emperor (Go-Daigo) entrusted the Crown Prince, Prince Tsuneyoshi, to Yoshisada (Nitta Yoshisada) and sent them to the northern provinces. The Emperor, having been deceived by Takauji (Ashikaga Takauji) and attempting to leave the capital, was confined to the Kazan'in Palace. Ashikaga Takatsune and Kō no Moroyasu and others were dispatched to the northern provinces to attack Kanegasaki Castle in Echizen Province, where Yoshisada had taken refuge.
In the eleventh month, Takauji was appointed Dainagon (Major Counselor). The Kenmu Shikimoku of seventeen articles was established. The realm once again became the age of the warrior houses.
In the twelfth month, the Emperor (Go-Daigo) secretly slipped out of the capital and moved his court to Yoshino. Kusunoki Masashige's son, Masatsura, came to attend and guard him. Former retainers came and followed in attendance. According to one account, the imperial visit to Yoshino is said to have occurred in the eighth month of this year. From this time, Yoshino came to be called the Southern Court, and there were two sovereigns reigning.
