光明院 諱は豊仁。後伏見天皇の第四皇子である。
建武三年八月、尊氏（足利尊氏）の取り計らいによって即位された。この時、花園院を本院と称し、光厳院を新院と称した。
建武四年（南朝・後醍醐天皇、延元二年）三月、尊氏の諸将が金ケ崎城を攻め落とした。義貞（新田義貞）・義助は密かに瓜生の杣山城に隠れた。義貞の嫡男・義顕は自害した。尊良親王も自害なさった。春宮・恒良は京へ帰った。その後、直義（足利直義）がこれを害した。
四月、近衛関白・経忠が南朝へ赴いた。経忠の従弟・前内府・基嗣が関白となった。
七月、洞院公賢が右府（右大臣）を辞した。一条内府・経通が左府（左大臣）に任じられ、九条大納言・道教が右府（右大臣）に任じられ、鷹司大納言・師平が内府（内大臣）に任じられた。
八月、奥州国司・顕家（北畠顕家）が軍を起こした。
十二月、鎌倉を攻めた。義貞の次男・義興がこれに属した〔従軍した〕。

In the eighth month of Kenmu 3 (1336), he ascended the throne through the arrangements of Takauji (Ashikaga Takauji). At this time, the Hanazono-in was given the title of Hon'in (the Senior Retired Emperor), and the Kōgon-in was given the title of Shin'in (the Junior Retired Emperor).
In the third month of Kenmu 4 (Southern Court: the second year of Gendai under Emperor Go-Daigo, 1337), the generals of Takauji attacked and captured Kanegasaki Castle. Yoshisada (Nitta Yoshisada) and Yoshisuke secretly took refuge in Uryū's Somayama Castle. Yoshisada's eldest son, Yoshiaki, took his own life. Prince Tsuneyoshi also took his own life. The Crown Prince, Tsuneyoshi (Tsunenaga), returned to Kyoto. Thereafter, Tadayoshi (Ashikaga Tadayoshi) killed him.
In the fourth month, Konoe Kampaku Tsunetada proceeded to the Southern Court. Tsunetada's cousin, the former Naifu Motitsugu, became Kampaku.
In the seventh month, Tōin Kinkata resigned from the position of Ufu (Minister of the Right). Ichijō Naifu Tsunemichi was appointed Safu (Minister of the Left), Kujō Dainagon Michitomo was appointed Ufu (Minister of the Right), and Takatsukasa Dainagon Morahira was appointed Naifu (Minister of the Center).
In the eighth month, Kitabatake Akiie, the Provincial Governor of Mutsu, raised an army.
In the twelfth month, he attacked Kamakura. Yoshisada's second son, Yoshioki, joined this campaign.
