（義貞は書状を）叡山へ遣わし、山徒（延暦寺の僧兵たち）と連絡を取り合って、入洛しようとした。閏七月二日、義貞は黒丸の城を攻めたところ、流れ矢に当たって死んだ。享年三十七歳。義助は敗軍の勢力を集めて、越前の府に帰った。義興は東国へ帰り、顕信は奥州へ赴いた。
八月、尊氏は正二位に叙せられ、征夷大将軍の宣下があった。直義は従四位上に叙せられ、左兵衛督に任じられた。ある説には、直義は従四位上に叙せられ、左兵衛督に任じられたとある。またある説には、直義は副将軍の宣旨を受けたとも言われている。高師直は武蔵守に任じられ、武家の執事職に任じられて、その弟・師泰とともに権威を振るった。尊氏は政務を自ら行わず、直義に任せて執行させた。師直兄弟は直義と仲が良くなかった。

(Yoshisada sent a letter) to Mount Hiei, coordinating with the mountain's warrior monks (sōhei) with the intention of entering the capital. On the second day of the intercalary seventh month, Yoshisada attacked Kuromaru Castle and was struck by a stray arrow and died. He was thirty-seven years old. Yoshisuke gathered the remnants of the defeated forces and returned to Echizen-fu. Yoshioki returned to the eastern provinces, and Akiuobu proceeded to Ōshū (Mutsu Province).
In the eighth month, Takauji was granted the Senior Second Rank (Shōnii) and received the imperial proclamation appointing him Seii Taishōgun (Shogun). Tadayoshi was granted the Junior Fourth Rank Upper Grade (Jushii-jō) and appointed Captain of the Left Division of the Military Guards (Sahyōe no Kami). According to one account, Tadayoshi was granted the Junior Fourth Rank Upper Grade and appointed to the same post. According to another account, it is said that Tadayoshi received an imperial decree appointing him Vice-Shogun. Kō Moronao was appointed Governor of Musashi and assigned to the position of Chief Steward (shitsuji) of the warrior house, and together with his younger brother Moroyasu, they wielded great power. Takauji did not personally handle government affairs, leaving their execution to Tadayoshi. The Kō brothers were not on good terms with Tadayoshi.
In the same month, Emperor Go-Daigo of the Southern Court passed away at Yoshino. He was fifty-one years old. It had been six years since his restoration to the throne. The seventh imperial prince, Yoshinaga, ascended to the throne. This was Emperor Go-Murakami. His mother was the Jungo Renshi, a woman deeply beloved by the late emperor.
