The Middle Counselor (Chunagon) Minamoto no Chikafusa received the imperial proclamation granting him the honorary rank of Jugo (quasi-retired empress status). This was because he had rendered meritorious service as the father-in-law (maternal uncle/in-law) of the Southern Emperor. In the second month of the following year, the Southern Emperor departed Yoshino and made a progress (gyōkō) to Sumiyoshi and Tennōji. Minamoto no Akiyoshi, the governor (kokushi) of Ise Province, led troops and came to attend upon the Emperor. The Emperor then proceeded to Iwashimizu Hachimangū, and ordered Akiyoshi along with Kusunoki Masanori and others to suddenly attack the capital. Yoshiakira fled to Ōmi Province, and Hosokawa Yoriharu was killed in battle. Akiyoshi, receiving an imperial decree, entered the capital, went to Jimyōin-dono, and placed the In (Retired Emperor Kōgon), the New In (Retired Emperor Kōmei), the Reigning Emperor (Emperor Sukō), and the Crown Prince (Prince Naohito) into carriages and confined them to Anaō in the depths of Yoshino. As the Emperor had been captured after a mere three years on the throne, the capital Heiankyō (Kyoto) was left without a sovereign and fell into a state of desolation. Because the military conflicts continued unceasingly, neither the ritual purification ceremony (misogi) nor the Great Thanksgiving Festival (Daijōe) were performed. Around this time in the Kantō region, Yoshimune, the Left Minor General (Sahyōe no shōjō) and heir of the late Yoshisada, along with his elder half-brother Yoshioki, and Yoshiharu, the son of Yoshisuke, raised a righteous army and [fought] against Takauji at Musashino...
