In the second month of the fourth year (of Ōan, 1371), Yamana Tokiuji died. In the same month, since Kikuchi Takemasa and others of the Southern Court faction rose up in Chinzei (Kyushu), Imagawa Iyono-kami Sadayo, the lay monk known as Ryōshun, was appointed as the Tandai (Deputy) of Kyushu and dispatched there, with Ōuchi Yoshihiro assigned to accompany him. Around this time, the Kikuchi clan brought Kyushu under their sway, and the Southern Court prince whom they had installed and promoted was called Prince Kansei (Kanenaga), known as Ryōkai. (Ryōkai) dispatched an envoy with a ship to the Great Ming (China). The letter carried by this envoy bore the inscription "Ryōkai, King of Japan."
