後円融院 諱は緒仁。後光厳院の長子なり。母は崇賢門院、四辻の大納言藤原兼綱の娘なり。
応安四年（1371年）三月に受禅（位を譲り受ける）。時に十四歳。後光厳院の上皇が、院中にて政をお聞きになった。この時、光明院・崇光院もなお存命で伏見においでであった。譲位の沙汰について、かねてより崇光院がお聞きになり、御子・栄仁親王こそが正統である旨を頼之にご相談になられたが、後光厳もまた深く頼之を頼りにされていたため、伏見殿（崇光院）のご望みはかなわなかった。これより崇光院と後光厳院とは、御兄弟ながら不和となった。
五月、細川右馬助頼元が南方へ発向した。同月、細川武蔵守頼之は故あって管領職を辞して、西山の西芳寺に赴いた。

Go-En'yū-in: His personal name (imina) was Ōhito. He was the eldest son of Go-Kōgon-in. His mother was Sōken Mon'in, the daughter of Fujiwara no Kanetuna, the Great Counselor (Dainagon) of Yotsutsuji.
In the third month of Ōan 4 (1371), he received the abdication (of the throne), at the age of fourteen. The Retired Emperor Go-Kōgon exercised governance from his retired-emperor's residence (in'chū). At this time, both the Kōmyō-in (Retired Emperor Kōmyō) and Sōkō-in (Retired Emperor Sukō) were still alive and residing in Fushimi. Regarding the matter of the imperial succession, Retired Emperor Sukō had previously consulted Yoriyuki, expressing that his son Prince Yoshihito was the rightful heir. However, since Go-Kōgon also relied deeply on Yoriyuki, the wishes of the Fushimi Palace (Retired Emperor Sukō) were not fulfilled. From this point on, Retired Emperors Sukō and Go-Kōgon became estranged from each other, despite being brothers.
In the fifth month, Hosokawa Umanojo Yorimoto advanced toward the Southern (Court). In the same month, Hosokawa Musashi no Kami Yoriyuki, for reasons of his own, resigned the post of Kanrei (Deputy Shogun) and withdrew to Saihō-ji Temple on the western hills (of Kyoto).
