現代語訳
（頼之が西芳寺へ赴いたことを受けて）義満は赤松律師則祐らをして（頼之を）呼び返した。頼之はすぐに帰洛した。
ある説によれば、頼之は自らの威勢が強く、人々が甚だしく恐れていることを悟り、その威を収めて義満に威勢をつけるため、わざと義満と密かに相談し約束を交わし、諸大名が出座の際に義満に強く叱られた体裁をとって迷惑げな様子で、丹波の山国へしばらく蟄居した。これより人々は皆、将軍家を重んじるようになったという。
七月、藤原経顕が内府（内大臣）を辞した。同月、桃井直常が越中へ出張し合戦した。八月、南方の兵が蜂起して楠木の要害を攻めた。京都より加勢を多く遣わされた。十月、石清水八幡宮・叡山の造替（社寺の建て替え）があった。頼之が相模守に任じられた。十一月、赤松則祐が死す。享年六十。
（応安）五年三月、今川了俊が筑紫にて菊池武政らと合戦した。大内介義弘が兵を率いて了俊を救い、勝利を得た。

(Following Yoriyuki's withdrawal to Saihō-ji,) Yoshimitsu sent Akamatsu Risshi Sokuyu (Norisuké) and others to summon Yoriyuki back. Yoriyuki returned to the capital immediately.
According to one account, Yoriyuki, realizing that his own power had grown so strong that people feared him exceedingly, devised a scheme to diminish his own authority and build up Yoshimitsu's prestige. He secretly conspired and made an arrangement with Yoshimitsu, so that in the presence of the assembled great lords (daimyō), he would be harshly rebuked by Yoshimitsu, and then withdrew to Yamaguni in Tanba Province, feigning embarrassment and distress, for a period of seclusion. From this time on, it is said that all people came to hold the Shogunal house in high regard.
In the seventh month, Fujiwara no Tsuneaki resigned as Naifu (Minister of the Center). In the same month, Momonoi Naotsune advanced to Etchū Province and engaged in battle. In the eighth month, the forces of the Southern Court rose up and attacked the fortress of the Kusunoki (clan). A large number of reinforcements were dispatched from Kyoto. In the tenth month, the reconstruction (zōtai) of the Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine and Mount Hiei (Enryaku-ji) took place. Yoriyuki was appointed as Sagami no Kami (Governor of Sagami). In the eleventh month, Akamatsu Norisuké died at the age of sixty.
In the third month of (Ōan) 5th year, Imagawa Ryōshun fought against Kikuchi Takemasa and others in Tsukushi (Kyushu). Ōuchi no Suke Yoshihiro led troops to rescue Ryōshun, and they achieved victory.
