九月、万寿寺を五山の列に加えた。東福寺は武家の制法に背いたため、五山の名を除こうとした。寺僧が謝罪したが（処分は）変わらなかった。その他、禅宗の法条（規則）が定められた。十一月、義満が初めて花押を据え、石清水（八幡宮）の神領を寄附された。このとき（義満は）十五歳であった。今年、南朝が改元して文中となった。
（応安）六年三月、細川左衛門左氏春が南方退治のため尼崎に陣を張った。六月、大明（明国）の使僧・仲猷と無逸が鎮西（九州）より入洛し、嵯峨に居を定めた。その趣旨は、大明からすでに使者を三度日本へ渡したといっても、筑紫にて菊池（氏）に阻まれ、京へ到ることができなかった。そのため両僧をして（京へ）来らしめたのである。義満はこれを聞いて驚いた。八月、南帝・長慶院が位をその弟・熈成王に譲り、吉野を落ち去った。南方の残党は河内の天野に陣を取り、京方の陣へ夜討ちをかけた。

In the ninth month, Manju-ji Temple was added to the ranks of the Gozan (Five Mountains). Tōfuku-ji Temple was to be stripped of its Gozan status due to its violation of the regulations of the warrior government. The temple monks apologized, but (the punishment) remained unchanged. In addition, regulations governing Zen Buddhism were established. In the eleventh month, Yoshimitsu affixed his seal (hanpan) for the first time, and the sacred landholdings (shinryō) of Iwashimizu (Hachiman Shrine) were donated. At this time, Yoshimitsu was fifteen years of age. This year, the Southern Court changed its era name to Bunchū.
In the third month of (Ōan) 6th year, Hosokawa Saemon no Sa Ujiharu encamped at Amagasaki for the suppression of the Southern forces. In the sixth month, the envoy-monks Chūyū and Muichi of the Great Ming (China) arrived in the capital from Chinzei (Kyushu) and were lodged at Saga. Their purpose was as follows: although the Great Ming had already dispatched envoys to Japan three times, they had been intercepted by the Kikuchi clan in Tsukushi (northern Kyushu) and were unable to reach the capital. Therefore, the two monks were sent (to accomplish this mission). Yoshimitsu was astonished upon hearing this. In the eighth month, the Southern Emperor Chōkei-in abdicated in favor of his younger brother, Prince Hiroshige (Kōgon-ō), and fled from Yoshino. The remnants of the Southern forces encamped at Amano in Kawachi Province and launched a night attack on the encampment of the Kyoto forces.
