[Yoshimitsu] set out for Tsukushi (Kyushu). Yoriyuki, Shiba Yoshimasa, Hatakeyama Yoshifuka, Nikiyo, Imagawa, Toki, Sasaki, and the clans of these lords—thirty-nine great lords (*daimyō*) in total—assembled a military force reaching one hundred thousand mounted warriors. Yamana Moroüji and the Akamatsu clan served as the vanguard.
In the fourth month, Yoshimitsu arrived in Aki Province. The vanguard reached Nagato and engaged in battle with Kikuchi Takemasa. Although Yamana and Akamatsu were defeated, Hosokawa Sanuki no Kami Yoshiyuki's forces from Shikoku pressed the attack in succession, whereupon Shimazu, Itō, and others turned against Kikuchi and surrendered. Kikuchi was defeated and, escorting the Prince of the Seisei Shogunate (*Seisei Shōgun no Miya*), encamped at Dazaifu. Harada, Akizuki, and other warriors of Kyushu all turned against Kikuchi. Kikuchi then encamped at Mount Kōra in Chikugo Province. Yoshimitsu arrived at Dazaifu, and Hosokawa, Yamana, Akamatsu, and others engaged Kikuchi in battle on numerous occasions.
