(Ujikiyo) had already come as far as Yodo, but when the day arrived, he suddenly claimed illness and did not proceed to Uji. Yoshimitsu was displeased and returned (to the capital) empty-handed.
In the eleventh month, Mitsuyuki was stripped of his position as *shugo* (military governor) of Izumi for obstructing the estates of the *Sentō* (the Retired Emperor's palace), and was expelled from the capital and banished to Tanba. Mitsuyuki, enraged, went to Izumi and urged Ujikiyo to rebel. Ujikiyo already harbored treasonous intentions, and moreover Mitsuyuki was both his nephew and his son-in-law. Furthermore, since Tokihiro and Ujiyuki had by this time already been pardoned and confirmed in their original domains, Ujikiyo grew increasingly uneasy on all fronts, and finally raised a rebellion.
On the twenty-ninth day of the twelfth month, Ujikiyo and Mitsuyuki launched separate attacks on the capital from Izumi and Tanba respectively. Yoshimitsu ordered Tsunehisa and the other great lords to repel them. On the last day of the month, battles were fought at Uchino and at various locations throughout the capital. Ujikiyo's younger brother Yoshikazu, along with the chief retainer Kobayashi, fought against Ōuchi Yoshihiro and were killed.
