(Continued from the previous page) Minamoto no Yoshinari resigned as Naidaijin (Minister of the Center), and Kazanin Dainagon Michisada was appointed Naidaijin in his place. According to one account, since there was no precedent for a warrior (buke) to be appointed Shōkoku (Grand Minister of State, Daijō-daijin) other than Taira no Kiyomori, the court nobles raised objections regarding Yoshimitsu's promotion. Yoshimitsu, enraged, threatened to seize the landholdings of the court nobles and furthermore declared his intention to become a king himself, and to elevate figures such as the Hosokawa and Hatakeyama to the level of the Sekke (Regent Houses) and Seiga houses. It is said that the imperial court, greatly alarmed, gave its approval.
In the first month of the second year of Ōei (1395), Yoshimitsu served as Naiben (Inner Functionary) at the White Horse Banquet (Aoma no Sechie). In the third month, Imaōgawa Sanenaō resigned as Minister of the Right. Kazanin Michisada succeeded him in that post. Tōin Kinsada was appointed Naidaijin. In the fourth month, the Emperor made an imperial visit (gyōkō) to Yoshimitsu's residence. In the same month, Regent Tsunetsugu resigned as Minister of the Left. Former Minister of the Right Imaōgawa Kinjika was appointed Minister of the Left. In the sixth month, Yoshimitsu resigned as Grand Minister of State. Former Minister of the Right Koga Minamoto no Tomomiichi was appointed Grand Minister of State. Imaōgawa Kinjika resigned as Minister of the Left. Kazanin Tō... (continues on the next page)
