（村上が鎌倉に加勢を求めた）ところ、持氏はこれを許容し、桃井を大将として、すでに出陣させようとした。上杉安房守憲実はこれを聞き、「信濃は関東の領地ではなく、京都（の）将軍の御下知によるべきである。持氏が関与するのはいかがなものか」と申したことにより、（出陣は）やみとなった。勝定院殿（義持）が薨去された時、継嗣がなかったため、持氏は入洛して将軍になろうと思われていたが、義教が還俗して武将（将軍）となったため、持氏は常に不快に思い、京都を攻めようとした。憲実がたびたび諫めたことにより、その君臣の間は睦まじからずあった。
永享九年四月、鎌倉の持氏は密かに上杉憲直・一色直兼をして、上杉憲実を討たせようとした。事が露見して鎌倉は騒動となった。持氏は自ら憲実の山内の邸へ赴いて和解し、憲直・直兼は鎌倉を追い出され、しばらく無事（平穏）であった。十月二十二日、義教の館へ（天皇の）行幸があり、関白以下百官みな供奉し、詩歌・管弦（の宴が催された）。

[Since Murakami had sought reinforcements from Kamakura,] Mochiuji granted the request and, appointing Momoi as commander, was about to dispatch troops. Upon hearing this, Uesugi Norizane, the Governor of Awa Province, remonstrated: "Shinano is not under the jurisdiction of the Kantō; it should be governed by the orders of the Shogun in Kyoto. How can it be appropriate for Mochiuji to involve himself in this matter?" As a result of this objection, the plan was abandoned. When the Lord of Shōjōin (Yoshimochi) passed away without an heir, Mochiuji had harbored hopes of going up to the capital and becoming Shogun. However, since Yoshinori had returned to secular life and assumed the position of Military Commander (Shogun), Mochiuji was constantly displeased and sought to attack Kyoto. Because Norizane repeatedly remonstrated with him, the relationship between lord and retainer became strained.
In the ninth year of Eikyō [1437], fourth month, Mochiuji of Kamakura secretly ordered Uesugi Norinao and Isshiki Naokane to kill Uesugi Norizane. The plot was discovered, and Kamakura fell into an uproar. Mochiuji himself went to Norizane's residence in Yamanouchi to effect a reconciliation. Norinao and Naokane were expelled from Kamakura, and for a time there was peace. On the twenty-second day of the tenth month, an imperial visit (gyōkō) was made to Yoshinori's residence, and the Kampaku and all the court officials attended in procession, while poetry and music (were performed at the banquet).
