(Continued from the previous page)…the assailant's eyes became blinded and he collapsed, so His Majesty the Emperor was fortunately able to escape harm, and proceeded in imperial progress (gyōkō) to the residence of Lord Konoe (Fusatsugu). Regarding the Three Sacred Imperial Regalia: although they had been stolen by the ruffians, the naishi-dokoro (the sacred mirror) was retrieved by Sasaki Kuroda, the guard at the eastern gate, and duly presented (to the court). The sacred sword (hōken) had been discarded near Kiyomizudera Temple, and a man called Shingetsubō found it and presented it. However, the sacred jewel (shinji, the imperial seal) was seized and carried off. The ruffians climbed up to Mount Hiei, and sent a dispatch (chōsō) stating their intention to enthrone a prince of the Southern Emperor's line who had been a monk at Manjuji Temple. Hino Ichii Arimitsu-nyūdō was found to have consented to this plot, and was killed along with his son, Udaiben Saisho Sukechika. Warriors climbed up to Mount Hiei and, together with the warrior-monks (shuto), attacked the ruffians, whereupon the prince in question and all the others were killed. Around the same time, rōnin (masterless samurai) from Banshū province installed Akamatsu Saburō as their leader and raised a revolt, but they were suppressed and killed.
In the first month of the first year of Bun'an (1444), Yoshinari made his first visit in procession to the residence of Hatakeyama Tokuhon. Along the route, the various daimyō set up guard posts (tsujigaKatame) at the crossroads.
In the third month, soybeans and adzuki beans fell from the empty sky (kūkū) upon the capital.
In the fourth month, the residents of the Western Capital (Nishino-kyō) and the residents of the Eastern Capital (Higashino-kyō) brought a lawsuit (soron) over the buying and selling of sake yeast (sakekiku), and the Western Capital (residents)…(the page continues)
