In the first month of the third year [of Bun'an, 1446], Ichijō Kaneyoshi was appointed Grand Minister of State (Daijō-daijin), ranking above the Regent and Minister of the Left, Fusatsugu. The Minister of the Interior (Naidaijin), Tokifusa, resigned, and Tōin Dainagon Fujiwara no Sanehiro was appointed in his place. Kaneyoshi was forty-six years old at the time, renowned for his broad learning and wide-ranging talents, and had authored many works. He was also well-versed in Shinto, the art of poetry (waka), and Buddhist studies. Sanehiro, too, was known for his expertise in court precedent and ceremonial matters (yūsoku kojitsu).
In the fourth month, Regent Fusatsugu resigned from the position of Minister of the Left. Takatsukasa Udaijin Fusahira was transferred to become Minister of the Left, and Nijō Dainagon Mochimichi was appointed Minister of the Right. In the same month, Yoshinari (later Ashikaga Yoshimasa) performed his first reading ceremony (dokusho-hajime) and first horse-riding ceremony (umayori-hajime). In the twelfth month, Yoshinari's formal name was determined, and the Emperor personally brushed the characters. Nijō Udaijin Mochimichi conveyed and presented this to Yoshinari. In the same month, Yoshinari was granted the junior fifth rank, lower grade (Jushō-i no Ge).
This year, the senior monk Shūhō of Shōkokuji (known by the sobriquet Zuikei) took up residence as head priest of Rokuon-in and became the head of the Office of Monastic Records (Sōroku-shi).
