(Continued from previous page) …they caused the rōnin and others to suddenly attack Tokuhon's residence and set it ablaze. Tokuhon and Yoshinari fled; Yoshinari headed to Kawachi Province, while Tokuhon withdrew into seclusion at the Sairai-in sub-temple of Kennin-ji. Against his wishes, Tokuhon acknowledged Masanaga as heir. Katsumoto then championed Masanaga's cause and arranged for him to have an audience with Yoshimasa. Thereupon, the vermillion-sealed document (migyōsho) ordering Masanaga's punishment was revoked, and Masanaga was made to succeed Tokuhon's house. However, Yoshimasa, enraged that this disturbance had been Sōzen's doing, assembled his troops and attempted to have Sōzen put to death. Katsumoto interceded in various ways to placate Yoshimasa, and Sōzen was confined to Tajima Province, while Sōzen's son Noritoyō remained in the capital to serve. Katsumoto likewise had his own retainer, one Isokae (of uncertain given name), put to death on the grounds that he had been the ringleader of this latest disturbance; he then offered his apologies to Yoshimasa, and peace was restored throughout the land. In the twelfth month, in the Kantō region, Ashikaga Shigeuji secretly conspired with Yūki Ujitomo's son Naritomo and killed Uesugi Ukyō-no-suke (Junior Assistant of the Right Capital Office) Noritada, proclaiming it an act of vengeance for the wrongs done to Mochiuji and Ujitomo. The retainers of the Uesugi clan, including Nagao and others, championed Uesugi Fusaaki of Echigo Province and settled in Kōzuke Province… (continues on next page)
