(Continued from previous page) …they attacked Kamakura and fought against Shigeuji. Shigeuji was ultimately defeated and relocated to Koga in Shimotsuke Province. This place came to be known as the Koga Palace (Koga no Gosho). Fusaaki entered Kamakura and took control of the Kantō region as its military governor (kanrei). From this point, the Koga faction and the Kamakura faction split apart, and the eastern provinces fell into great turmoil. In the fifth month of Kōshō 1 (1455), Hosokawa Sanuki-no-kami Nariyuki, lamenting the extinction of the Akamatsu clan's line, saw Yamana Sōzen's confinement as a convenient opportunity. He petitioned Yoshimasa for the pardon of Akamatsu Mitsusuke's nephew, Hikogōrō Norihisa (Norinao), and had Norihisa dispatched to his ancestral domain in Harima Province. Since Harima was a province that had been granted to Sōzen, he was greatly enraged, and he led his forces to crush the Akamatsu. Norihisa was killed in battle. Sōzen thereupon entered the capital (Kyoto). His power and prestige were such that none could stand as his equal. In the sixth month, Takatsukasa Fusahira resigned from the positions of regent (kanpaku) and Minister of the Left (Sadaijin). Nijō Mochimichi was reappointed as regent. Former Inner Minister (Naidaijin) Saionji Kinna was appointed Grand Minister of State (Daijō-daijin). In the seventh month, Hatakeyama Yoshinari came out from Kawachi Province and plundered the area around Kataoka in Yamato Province. Yoshimasa summoned him back and had him reconcile with Masanaga.
