…(Sanemasa) resigned from the position of Naidaijin (Inner Minister). The shogun Minamoto no Yoshimasa was appointed Naidaijin. He was twenty-four years of age at the time. In the eighth month, the sacred imperial seal (shinshi) was returned from the Southern region to the imperial palace. This came about because a retainer of the Akamatsu clan, a man called Iwami Tarōzaemon, had become a rōnin (masterless samurai) and entered the service of Sanjō Udaijin (Minister of the Right) Sanekazu, all while lamenting the extinction of the Akamatsu clan. Sanekazu said: "Could there not be some service rendered that might atone for the great treachery of Kakitsu?" Iwami replied: "If I were to go south, assassinate their king, and recover and return the sacred seal—what would come of that?" Sanekazu reported this to the Emperor and also informed the military government (bakufu), and the plan was approved.
