In the second year, seventh month, Tokudaiji Kimitomo resigned from the position of Naidaijin (Inner Minister). Kuga Dainagon (Grand Counselor) Minamoto no Michihisa was appointed Naidaijin. In the eighth month, Yoshimasa resigned from the position of Taishō (Major Captain). In the tenth month, Yoshimasa's younger brother, Sahyōe-no-suke Masatomo, descended to the Kantō region. This was because Uesugi Fusaaki and Koga's Shigeuji had been engaged in battle for many years, the eastern provinces had not been pacified, and the Kantō region had requested Masatomo and desired to make him their lord. However, Masatomo did not enter Kamakura, but instead took up residence in Hōjō in Izu Province. Both the Yamanouchi and Ōgigayatsu branches of the Uesugi clan revered Masatomo and referred to him as "the Lord of Horikoshi." Nevertheless, the eastern provinces all followed the commands of the Uesugi, and Masatomo had little real authority. In the twelfth month, the former Kampaku of the Konoe clan, Fusatsugu, was appointed Daijō-daijin (Grand Minister of State). He was fifty-nine years of age. In the third year, fourth month, Hatakeyama Yoshimasa fought valiantly, and as Masanaga began to lose his advantage, Hosokawa Sanuki-no-kami Shigeyuki, Yamana Danjō Koretoya, and along with them Takeda, Sasaki, and the Provincial Governor of Ise, Kitabatake Noritomo, were dispatched as reinforcements for Masanaga. Yoshimasa was defeated in battle, and…
