Yamana Sōzen harbored resentment over [Hosokawa Katsumoto's] reestablishment of the Akamatsu clan, and upon hearing of Yoshimasa's (Hatakeyama Yoshimasa's) valor in the battles of these past several years, Sōzen resolved to make him an ally and secretly established contact with him. Katsumoto was Sōzen's son-in-law and on close terms with him; moreover, since Katsumoto had no children, he had adopted one of Sōzen's sons, but when Katsumoto's own biological son was born, the adopted son was made a monk. From this point on, relations between the Hosokawa and Yamana clans deteriorated, and signs emerged that they would contest for power. In the fifth year, first month, Minamoto no Michihisa resigned from the office of Naidaijin (Minister of the Center). In the fourth month, Zeami On'ami and his son Matasaburō performed a subscription Sarugaku (Noh theater) at Tadasu-no-kawara. Yoshimaga had a viewing stand constructed and watched for three days. Hosokawa Katsumoto, Hatakeyama Masanaga, and Shiba Yoshikado took turns bearing the expenses. On the return journey, [Yoshimasa] visited the residences of the three Kanrei families and summoned the Sarugaku performers to bestow gifts upon them. In the seventh month, the Dainagon (Major Counselor) of the Kujō clan, Masatada, was appointed Naidaijin. In the same month, the Emperor abdicated the throne and ceded his position to the Crown Prince, Narinobu (Narihito).
