[Yoshimasa] made a promise to cede [rule of the realm to Yoshimi], and appointed Hosokawa Katsumoto as Yoshimi's shitsuji (administrative officer).
In the first month of [Kanshō] sixth year, Yoshimi was granted the rank of Jushii-no-ge (Junior Fourth Rank, Lower Grade). In the second month, the Hajime-no-han (ceremonial first signing of documents) and the Kyūba-hajime (ceremonial first archery and horsemanship of the year) were held. In the third month, Yoshimasa held a cherry blossom viewing at Higashiyama, organized by Hosokawa Katsumoto. In the eighth month, Yoshimasa watched inuōmono (a dog-chasing equestrian event) from Hosokawa Katsumoto's raised viewing stand (sajiki). In the ninth month, Kujō-dono Masatada resigned from the post of Naidaijin (Minister of the Interior). Imadegawa Dainagon Fujiwara no Noritsue was appointed Naidaijin. In the eleventh month, Yoshimi underwent his coming-of-age ceremony (genpuku), was appointed Sangi (Counselor), and concurrently held the post of Hidari no Chūjō (Middle Captain of the Left Imperial Guard). In the same month, Yoshimasa's御台所 (principal wife), Fujiwara no Tomiko, gave birth to a male child. She secretly appealed to Yamana Sōzen, saying: "If Yoshimi is to inherit the headship of the clan, is this child destined to become a monk? I beg you to please look after and protect him." Sōzen, who had long been on bad terms with Katsumoto, thought: "If Yoshimi's era comes, Katsumoto will grow ever more powerful," and thus agreed to support and protect the young lord. In the twelfth month, Yoshimi was appointed Dainagon (Grand Counselor) and granted the rank of Jusanmi (Junior Third Rank). In the same month, the ceremony of Imperial enthronement was held.
