[Sadachika, Zuiseidō, and Yoshitoshi] fled from the capital. Hino Dainagon Katsumitsu and Isshiki Norinao devised a plan, and Yoshimasa and Yoshimi were reconciled. Sōzen sought the support of the Midaidokoro (the shogun's principal wife) and petitioned Yoshimasa to have Hatakeyama Yoshihiro enter the capital, making him his own ally. Hatakeyama Masanaga, alarmed by this, drew ever closer to Hosokawa Katsumoto. In the first month of Ōnin 1 (1467), Yamana Sōzen and Hatakeyama Yoshihiro placed guards at the four gates of the shogunal compound, summoned Yoshimi to the Muromachi Palace as well, and had the Emperor and the Retired Emperor make imperial visits to the Muromachi Palace. They then proposed killing Hosokawa Katsumoto and Hatakeyama Masanaga, but this was not permitted. Yoshimi dispatched a messenger to urge Katsumoto to sever his ties with Masanaga, and Katsumoto complied. As a result, an inzen (imperial edict) was issued ordering the suppression of Masanaga. With Yoshihiro as commander, battle was joined with Masanaga at the Forest of Goryō. Masanaga fled. Sōzen and Yoshihiro wielded their power throughout the capital. In the same month, Saionji Sanetō resigned from the office of Naidaijin. Hino Katsumitsu was appointed Naidaijin. In the second month, Shiba Yoshikado was appointed Kanrei (Deputy Shogun). Katsumoto [wielded his power…]
