Among others, great and lesser lords such as Kira Yoshifuji and Niki Norikazu — those who followed Sōzen were said to number one hundred and eleven thousand men. Katsumoto's camp was in the east, and Sōzen's camp was in the west. The capital was divided between them, and each side provoked the other. Yoshimi immediately went to both Katsumoto and Sōzen to mediate, but neither side would come to agreement.
In the fifth month, Nijō Mochimichi resigned as Kampaku [Imperial Regent]. The Taikō [Retired Regent] Ichijō Kaneyoshi was once again appointed Kampaku. In the same month, Katsumoto dispatched Akamatsu Masanori toward Harima and Bizen. As these were Akamatsu's home provinces, he pacified them before long, then mustered the troops of both provinces and returned to the capital. From Sōzen's side, Isshiki Yoshinao was appointed to guard Yoshimasa's mansion. Katsumoto led a great army, defeated Yoshinao, immediately secured the Shogunal palace, received Yoshimasa's battle banner, and [set out to] strike down Sōzen.
From the sixth month onward, battles began and did not cease a single day. Many residences, temples, and shrines in and around the capital were burned and destroyed.
In the eighth month, Ōuchi no Suke [Deputy Governor] Masahiro led a great force to the capital and joined Sōzen's side. Akamatsu resisted and engaged in battle in Settsu province, but was defeated. In the same month, Katsumoto [and his lord...]
