In the seventh month of the second year [of Bunmei, 1470], Ichijō Kanpaku Kaneyoshi resigned. In the eighth month, Nijō Safu Masatsugu became Kanpaku [Imperial Regent]. Kaneyoshi was at this time sixty-nine years of age. The books and writings handed down through the generations [in the Ichijō family] were either lost to fire or plundered amid the warfare in the capital, and Kaneyoshi withdrew into seclusion in Nara. His son, the former Kanpaku Fusafusa, went down to Hyōgo, and his grandson Fusaie went down to Tosa. The Ichijō clan of Tosa traces its descent from this line. The various other court officials likewise scattered and fled in all directions. In the twelfth month, the Retired Emperor Gohanazono passed away at the Muromachi Palace, at the age of fifty-two. In the first month of the third year [of Bunmei, 1471], the Retired Emperor was interred at Hidenjī temple. Yoshimasa followed the procession on foot. Because this took place in the midst of military turmoil, the Kanryō Katsumoto, the Samurai-dokoro [head] Akamatsu Masanori, and the Shoshidai Urakami Norimune all provided strict and solemn security. In the fifth month, Yoshimasa granted the province of Echizen to Asakura Takakage. Echizen had been the hereditary domain of the Shiba Buei [clan]. However, their chief retainer, a certain Kai [no Nanigashi], took advantage of the chaos of the warfare, killed the Buei, and [seized the province...]
