[Kai no Nanigashi had] seized [Echizen]. Asakura then killed Kai and ultimately became the lord of Echizen. Thereafter, the descendants of the Buei became rōnin [masterless samurai] and made their way to the Kantō region. Owari, too, had been the domain of the Buei, but their chief retainer, Oda [no Nanigashi], seized it.
In the same year, in the Kantō region, Uesugi Akisada fought against Ashikaga Shigeuji of Koga. The castle of Koga fell, and Shigeuji fled to Chiba. The realm became entirely a world of warring states.
In the fourth year [of Bunmei, 1472], the battle between Katsumoto and Sōzen in the capital still had not ceased. Hatakeyama Yoshitsuna of Noto, who had been allied with Sōzen, submitted to Katsumoto in accordance with Yoshimasa's wishes. As a result, the northern provinces route was opened, and a great quantity of provisions gathered at Katsumoto's camp. Consequently, many on Sōzen's side surrendered.
In the fifth month of the fifth year [of Bunmei, 1473], on the nineteenth day of the third month, Yamana Uemon no Kami Mochitoyo, the lay monk Sōzen, passed away. He was seventy years of age. On the eleventh day of the fifth month, Hosokawa Ukyō no Daibu Katsumoto passed away. He was forty-four years of age. He is known posthumously by the temple name Ryōanji. From the first year of Ōnin to this point, seven years of warfare — the [outcome of the] battle [between] the victorious —
