The outcome [of the battle] was never decided. Both commanders died of illness, yet their factions continued to face each other in battle formation within the capital. The Imperial Court also fell into ever greater decline from this point, and all annual ceremonies and observances fell into abeyance. The authority of the military commanders also grew light, and [those below] ceased to heed their orders. In the sixth month [of Bunmei 5, 1473], the Grand Chancellor [Ichijō] Kaneyoshi took the tonsure. He was seventy-two years of age. He was later known by the posthumous name Jōonji, and his Buddhist name was Kakue. In the twelfth month, Yoshihisa came of age [underwent his genpuku ceremony]. Yoshimasa performed the crowning rite [kakan]. Yanagiwara Saishō Hiromitsu served as the hairdresser [rihatsuyaku]. [Yoshihisa] was appointed to the Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade, and was assigned the post of Middle Captain of the Left [Sakon'e no Chūjō]. On the same day, receiving the transfer [of authority] from Yoshimasa, he was appointed Sei'i Taishōgun [Shogun] and had an audience with the Emperor. At this time, he was nine years of age. Hatakeyama Masanaga was appointed Kanrei [Deputy Shogun], but after seven days he was removed from the post, and Hatakeyama Yoshitsuna was appointed Kanrei. In the sixth year [of Bunmei, 1474], Yoshihisa was appointed to the Junior Fourth Rank, Lower Grade. In the ninth month, Yoshimasa dispatched a letter to Korea [Joseon], seeking the seal of the official trade tallies [kangō] of Great Ming. In the seventh year [of Bunmei, 1475], in the first month, Yoshihisa additionally assumed the post of Acting Governor of Mimasaka. In the second month, the Regent Nijō Masa[tomo] —
