明応三年（1494）十一月、義通は正五位下に叙せられ、左馬頭に任じられ、名を義高と改めた。十二月、義高は征夷大将軍に任じられた。時に年齢十六歳。
同月、伊勢の新九郎は、駿河の今川から兵を借りて、伊豆より相模へ越え、小田原の城を取って居城とした。新九郎は剃髪して、自ら北条早雲と号した。これより以降、その勢力は次第に盛んになった。その子を氏綱という。父子ともに武勇があり、ついに上杉と合戦して、関東の覇権を争った。

In the eleventh month of the third year of Meiō [1494], Yoshimichi was elevated to Senior Fifth Rank Lower Grade [Shōgo-i-ge] and appointed Head of the Left Stables [Sama no Kami], and changed his name to Yoshitaka. In the twelfth month, Yoshitaka was appointed Sei'i Taishōgun [Shogun]. He was sixteen years of age at the time.
In the same month, Ise no Shinkyūrō borrowed troops from the Imagawa of Suruga Province, crossed from Izu into Sagami Province, captured Odawara Castle, and took up residence there. Shinkyūrō shaved his head and styled himself Hōjō Sōun. From this point, his power gradually grew. His son was called Ujitsuna. Father and son both possessed military valor, and eventually went to battle against the Uesugi, contending for dominance over the Kantō region.
