At this time, Hōjō Sōun and his son Ujitsuna advanced from Odawara Castle into Musashi Province [Bushū], wielding military might throughout the Kantō region; consequently, both Uesugi clans joined forces to resist the Hōjō and engaged them in battle.
In the second month of the third year [Eishō 3, 1506], the Regent Kujō Hisatsune was transferred to the post of Safu [Minister of the Left]. Saionji Kinfuji was appointed to the post of Ufu [Minister of the Right]. Nishisanjō Dainagon and concurrent Jijū [Chamberlain], Sanetaka, was appointed to the post of Naifu [Minister of the Center]. Sanetaka possessed talent in both Japanese and Chinese learning, and was particularly accomplished in the composition of waka poetry. Although he was of a cadet branch of the Sanjō clan, he raised his family's standing through his abilities. In the fourth month, Sanetaka resigned from the post of Naifu. Takatsukasa Dainagon Kanesuke was appointed to the post of Naifu. In the ninth month, more than seven thousand trees on Mount Kasuga withered and died.
In the third month of the fourth year [Eishō 4, 1507], Yoshizumi undertook a seven-day retreat [sanrō] at Kasuga Shrine, during which time a kagura ritual performance was held. In the same month, Saionji Kinfuji resigned from the post of Ufu [Minister of the Right]. In the fourth month, Takatsukasa Kanesuke was appointed to the post of Ufu — [continued on next page]
