[Continued from previous page: Takatsukasa Kanesuke was appointed to the post of Ufu.] Sanjō Dainagon Sanekа was appointed to the post of Naifu [Minister of the Center]. He is the legitimate heir of the main Sanjō line and bears the title "Tenpōrin" [転法輪]. In the sixth month, Kakō Matasaburō [Kōsai Matarokū], a retainer of Hosokawa Ukyō no Daibu Masamoto, plotted rebellion and bribed Togura [某, a certain person], a minor retainer of Masamoto. On the night of the twenty-third of that month, Masamoto had entered his bathing chamber [yudono] for the purpose of ritual Atago abstinence [purification]. Togura followed him inside and secretly killed Masamoto. Masamoto's close attendant Habakabe hurried to the scene, whereupon Togura stabbed him once with his sword and fled. Habakabe also died [from his wounds]. From the time of [Ashikaga] Takauji onwards, the Hosokawa clan had held dominion over the four provinces of Shikoku. Since [Hosokawa] Yoriyuki, the main line [chakuryū] had served as Kanrei [Deputy Shogun] and therefore resided in the capital, being called the "Upper Mansion" [Kami no Yakata]. Yoriyuki's younger brothers Norishige [Noriharu], Mitsuyuki, and others remained in their home provinces of Awa and Sanuki. These were called the "Lower Mansion" [Shimo no Yakata]. Masamoto habitually claimed to practice esoteric arts [mahō] and on this pretext observed ritual purification. As a result, he had no children. He adopted as his son Rokurō Sumimoto, the child of Motokатsu [Motokatsu], the Governor of Sanuki, who belonged to the Lower Mansion. However, before Sumimoto had yet made his way up to the capital, Masamoto was suddenly struck down. Through the scheming of Kōsai and others, [they installed] the Regent of the Kujō clan — [continued on next page]
