[Continuing from previous page] — they took in the youngest son of [Kujō] Naotune, gave him the name Hosokawa Kurō Sumiyuki, and sought to establish him as Masamoto's adopted heir. The capital fell into turmoil, and Kōsai and his associates fortified themselves in a castle they constructed at Arashiyama.
In the seventh month, Sumimoto advanced from Awa Province to Settsu Province with Miyoshi Chikuzen no Kami Nagатeru and others, commanding a force of three thousand cavalry, and from there marched up to the capital, encamping in the Upper Capital [Kamigyō].
In the eighth month, they engaged Kōsai and his forces in battle across the Toto Bridge [百々の橋]. Habakabe led the vanguard and slew Togura [the assassin of Masamoto]. Kōsai was struck by an arrow and killed as well. His entire faction was routed, and Hosokawa Kurō [Sumiyuki] was also slain. Tranquility was restored to the capital. Sumimoto became the Kanrei [Deputy Shogun] of the warrior house. Masamoto was forty-two years of age this year; his posthumous Buddhist name was Daishinin. Sumimoto was sixteen years of age at the time.
Nagатeru [Miyoshi Nagатeru] was a member of the Ogasawara clan of Shinano, who traced their lineage to the Minamoto. A branch had separated into Awa Province and was called "the Ogasawara of Awa." Because their descendants resided in Miyoshi in Awa Province, they came to be called Miyoshi. Since the time of [Hosokawa] Yoriyuki, the four provinces of Shikoku had already fallen under the dominion of the Hosokawa, and thus the Miyoshi were also under their banner. It was for this reason that they championed Sumimoto and struck down Kōsai. From this point on, the Miyoshi clan — [continued on next page]
