[Continuing from previous page] — From this point on, the power of the Miyoshi clan gradually became manifest, and they harbored ambitions of controlling the capital. In the first month of the fifth year [of Eishō, 1508], Ōuchi no Suke Tatara Yoshioki, upon hearing of the turmoil in the capital and the death of [Hosokawa] Masamoto, judged the moment opportune. He championed the cause of the former Shogun, Minamoto no Yoshitada [Yoshitane], and mustered the forces of Tsukushi [Kyushu] and the Chūgoku region to march upon the capital. In the fourth month, Hosokawa Ukyō no Daibu Sumimoto abandoned the capital and retreated to Awa Province. The Shogun Minamoto no Yoshizumi also fled the capital and made his way to Ōmi Province, where he sought the protection of the Sasaki clan. Yoshitane arrived as far as the port of Sakai in Izumi Province. In the fifth month, Miyoshi Nagатeru, having taken Buddhist vows under the name Kiun, advanced from Awa to Settsu Province and broke into the capital. Coordinating with the forces of the Hosokawa and Sasaki clans, they engaged Ōuchi no Suke in battle. The Miyoshi forces were defeated, and Kiun, together with his sons Nagamitsu and Naganori, committed suicide at the temple of Hyakumanben in the capital. In the sixth month, Yoshitane entered the capital. In the seventh month, Yoshitane was granted the court rank of Junior Third Rank [Jushii], appointed to the office of Great Counselor [Dainagon], and was reappointed as Seii Taishōgun [Shogun]. Ōuchi no Suke Yoshioki was charged with the governance [seihai] of the Home Provinces [Kinai], the Chūgoku region, and the Western Sea circuit [Saikai], and was appointed Kanrei [Deputy Shogun]. The Shiba and Hosokawa [clans] — [continued on next page]
