[Continuing from previous page] — This marked the first time that a clan other than the Hosokawa and Hatakeyama had assumed the office of Kanrei [Deputy Shogun]. In the twelfth month, Yoshitane was granted the court rank of Junior Second Rank [Jūnii]. From the second year of Meiō [1493] for a period of fourteen years, Yoshizumi had governed, while Yoshitane wandered in the Western Sea circuit [Kyushu]; but now, in this year [the fifth year of Eishō, 1508], Yoshizumi became a wanderer, and Yoshitane returned to the capital and was restored to his position.
In the sixth year [of Eishō, 1509], sixth month, Yoshitane had an audience at the Imperial Palace. On the night of the twenty-sixth day of the tenth month, thieves launched a night attack on Yoshitane's residence and broke into his sleeping quarters. Yoshitane himself went out to repel them and drove them away, sustaining wounds in nine places. This was likely the doing of Yoshizumi and those of the Hosokawa faction. In the same month, Yoshitane dispatched his troops toward Ōmi Province. In the twelfth month, the reconstruction and re-enshrinement [zōtai sengū] of the Kasuga Grand Shrine took place, and the Imperial envoy, a Kurōdo [Chamberlain], together with Korenaga, proceeded there. In the same month, Tokudaiji former Sadaijin [Minister of the Left] Sanetō was appointed Daijō Daijin [Grand Minister of State].
In the seventh year [of Eishō, 1510], on the fourteenth day of the second month, the capital's forces advanced toward Ōmi Province. On the twenty-eighth day, the capital's army was defeated. In the same month, Nagao Tamekage, a retainer of Uesugi Akisada, in Echigo Province — [continued on next page]
