He was fifty-seven years of age. This man had proceeded from Echigo to Kamakura at the age of fourteen, and had governed the Kantō region for over forty years. Having no male heir, he adopted as his son Akizane, the younger brother of Koga [Kubō] Masauji. He also adopted as a son Norифуса [Norifusa], the grandson of Norizane.
In the eighth year [of Eishō, 1511], second month, Tokudaiji Sanetō resigned from his position as Daijō Daijin [Grand Minister of State] and took the tonsure. He was sixty-seven years of age. In the same month, Urabe no Kanетоmo [Kanетоmo], of Junior Second Rank, passed away at the age of seventy-seven. From his ancestor Kanenоbu onward, his family had for generations served as the head priests of Yoshida Shrine and performed the duties of divination and ritual blessing [bokuschuku]. In Kanетоmo's time, he brought Shinto into alignment with Buddhist doctrine and mastered [literally: "liberated"] its methods. In the eighth month, the former Shōgun, Minamoto no Yoshizumi, of Third Rank and Sangi [Counsellor], passed away on Mount Oka in Ōmi Province. He was thirty-two years of age. He took the posthumous Buddhist name Kyokuzan Seikō, and his temple name was Hōjūin. He was later posthumously granted the ranks of Daijō Daijin and Senior First Rank.
In the same month, Hosokawa Umannosuke Masakata [Masamoto] mustered troops from Shikoku and the eastern provinces, and [advanced upon] the capital — [continued on next page]
