[Sokkei] became an envoy and crossed over to Great Ming [China], then returned to Japan, took up residence there, and came to serve Takakuni. At this same time, Ōuchi no suke [Assistant Governor] Yoshioki also dispatched a trading vessel from Suō Province to Great Ming. The envoy was a man called Sōsetsu. At Ningbo [Mingbo] Prefecture, Sokkei and Sōsetsu quarreled over precedence [in presenting themselves to the Chinese authorities]. Since Sōsetsu had arrived at shore before Sokkei, he should by right have gone first [to the reception], but Sokkei bribed the magistrate [bugyō] of Ningbo Prefecture and went out first to have an audience with him. Sōsetsu flew into a great rage, rallied the men he had brought with him, burned Ningbo Prefecture [the relevant official facilities], killed the magistrate, and committed acts of plunder and violence. Sokkei, who had fled and gone into hiding, was captured by Great Ming and imprisoned. Sōsetsu returned home without any punishment. From this point onward, Japanese pirates ravaged the vicinity of Ningbo year after year.
In the first month of the fifth year [1525], the New Year's Day banquet [Sechi-e] was abruptly reduced to an abbreviated ceremony, owing to the fact that the necessary funds [yōkyaku] had not been collected. In the fourth month, Nijō Tatsufusa resigned as Regent [Kanpaku]. Konoe Ufu [Minister of the Right] Ueki was appointed Regent. In the sixth month, Konoe Shōkoku [Chancellor, Daijō-daijin] Hisamichi, together with his son, Regent Ueki, traveled together to Kasuga [the text continues on the next page]...
