Because Fuyuyoshi had no children, he summoned Fusatō to the capital [Kyoto], made him his son-in-law, and designated him as his heir. In the eleventh month of the ninth year [of Tenbun, 1540], Saionji Sanenori resigned as Minister of the Left [Sadaijin]. That same year, a conflict began between Amago Haruhisa of Izumi Province and Mōri Motonari, the lord of Yoshida Castle in Aki Province. The Amago clan were of the Sasaki lineage and had resided in Izumi Province for generations. As their military power had grown strong and they had subjugated the neighboring provinces, Motonari had also been among their vassals. However, having become the object of Haruhisa's suspicion and falling into discord with him, Motonari submitted to Ōuchi-no-suke [Vice Governor of Ōuchi] Yoshitaka. Haruhisa, enraged, surrounded Yoshida Castle with a force of several tens of thousands. Suō Owari-no-kami Harukata, a senior retainer [karō] of the Ōuchi clan, came to render assistance and took up a battle position opposite Amago. The Amago forces were defeated and returned home. In the first month of the tenth year [1541], Takatsukasa Tadafuyu was transferred to the position of Minister of the Left [Sadaijin]. Ichijō Fusatō was appointed Minister of the Right [Udaijin]. Nishisanjō Dainagon Kinjō [Kineda] was appointed Naidaijin [Minister of the Interior]. Kinjō was the son of Sanekata [Sanetaka]. He too possessed talent in both Japanese and Chinese learning, and his erudition surpassed that of his father. In the third month, Kinjō... [continued on next page]
