[Continued from previous page] His Buddhist name was Jōkaku, and his posthumous temple name was Shōmyō-in. His father, the lay monk Shōyō-in, passed away in the tenth month of Tenbun 6 [1537].
In the seventh month [of Tenbun 13, 1544], there was a great flood throughout the capital (Rakuchū) and its surrounding areas (Rakugai).
In the sixth month of the fourteenth year [of Tenbun, 1545], Takatsukasa Tadafuyu resigned as Kampaku [Imperial Regent]. Ichijō Sadaijin [Minister of the Left] Fusatō ascended to the capital from Tosa Province and was appointed Kampaku. Sanjō Udaijin [Minister of the Right] Kinyori resigned as Minister of the Right. Imadegawa Naidaijin [Minister of the Interior] Kimihiko was appointed Minister of the Right. Nijō Sakon'e-no-Taishō [Left Commander of the Imperial Guard] Haruyoshi was appointed Naidaijin.
Fusatō had traveled back and forth between Kyoto and Tosa. His younger brother, Fuyuyu, inherited the Tosa-Ichijō family line. It appears that even other members of the court nobility found it difficult to remain in the capital: former Kampaku Nijō Inbō was in Bingo Province, and later proceeded to Suō Province, seeking the support of the Ōuchi clan. Former Kampaku Kujō Uetsū was in Settsu Province and moved to Harima Province. Sanjō Udaijin Kinyori and Asukai Dainagon Masatsuna descended to Echizen Province, occasionally returning to the capital. Reizei Dainagon Tamekazu proceeded to Suruga Province. Others among the court nobles either went down to the Kantō region, or settled in the vicinity of Ise and Mino Provinces, becoming dependent on [the hospitality of] warriors. [Continued on next page]
