(Harukata) conducted affairs of state as he pleased. He shaved his head and took the Buddhist name Zenkyō. When Yoshitaka was killed, the "u-seal" (卯判) of the Ming dynasty tally trade was lost, and maritime trade between Japan and the Ming dynasty ceased. Around this time, Southern Barbarian (European) ships arrived and the Christian (Jesuit) faith began to spread. Ōtomo Sōrin is said to have also been drawn to this faith. This same year (1551), Hōjō Ujiyasu of Sagami Province captured Hirai Castle in Kōzuke Province. Uesugi Norimasa fled to Echigo Province. Norimasa's son Tatsuwaka was captured alive and killed. Norimasa fled to Echigo and placed his trust in Nagao Kagetora (the lay monk Kenshin), ceding to Kagetora the Uesugi clan name as well as the title of Kantō Kanrei (Deputy Shogun of the Kantō region), and begged him to strike down the Hōjō and avenge his humiliation. The greater part of the Kantō region submitted to Ujiyasu. However, at this time, Imagawa Yoshimoto was in Suruga, Takeda Shingen was in Kai, Nagao Kagetora was in Echigo, the Satomi were in Awa, Satake Yoshishige was in Hitachi, and Ashina Moritaka was in Aizu. Battles in the Kantō region never ceased. Beyond this, the Asakura were in Echizen, the Hatakeyama were in Noto, and in Mino, the Toki (土岐)...
