の娘である。舒明の皇后となる。舒明が崩御して、皇后が天皇の位に即いた。飛鳥の板蓋宮に住まわれた。蘇我蝦夷が大臣となって政治を行った。三韓より使者が来て、舒明を弔い、皇極の即位を賀した。この年大いに干ばつしたので、様々に神に祈り、また蝦夷の計らいで、経を読み仏に祈ったけれども雨が降らなかった。天皇自ら南淵川に行幸されて四方を拝し、天に祈られたところ、五日の間大雨が打ち続いて、民皆大いに悦び万歳と呼んだ。この時、大臣蝦夷は奢りの余りに、自分の祖廟を葛城に造り、その儀式で天子の歌舞を執り行った。蝦夷の子を入鹿といい、その威勢は父よりも勝っていた。自ら国の政治を執り行い、人皆恐れた。入鹿の一名を鞍作という。蝦夷が病気にかかったので、その着用する紫の冠を、私的に入鹿に譲り、大臣に准じさせた。入鹿はいよいよ威を振るった。聖

This year there was a great drought, so they prayed to the gods in various ways, and also at Emishi's suggestion, they read sutras and prayed to Buddha, but no rain fell. The Emperor herself made an imperial visit to the Minamibuchi River, bowed in the four directions, and prayed to Heaven. For five days great rains continued, and all the people greatly rejoiced and cried "Banzai!" At this time, Minister Emishi, in his excessive arrogance, built his ancestral shrine at Kazuragi and performed imperial songs and dances in its ceremonies. Emishi's son was called Iruka, and his power and influence exceeded even his father's. He personally conducted the government of the country, and everyone feared him. Iruka's other name was Kuratukuri. When Emishi fell ill, he privately transferred the purple cap he wore to Iruka, making him equivalent to a Great Minister. Iruka wielded even greater authority.
