前代の記録の多くが失われた。その焼け残った所を、船史恵尺が取り納めて、中大兄に奉った。天位を中大兄に譲ろうとした。しかしながら、中大兄の兄に、古人大兄皇子という人がいた。それを越えて即位するのはいかがなものかということで、まず御叔父の軽皇子を即位させられたならば神妙であろうと、鎌足が申したので、中大兄は「もっともである」と同心して、すなわち帝位を軽皇子に譲った。これも古人へ譲ろうとした。古人は入鹿と親しかったので、彼の滅亡を悼んで、位を辞して僧となった。これによって軽皇子が位についた。孝徳天皇がこれである。中大兄は後に天智天皇と申す。鎌足は藤原氏の元祖大織冠がこれである。この末、所々で申すであろう。帝王が存生の内に位を譲ることは、皇極を始めとする。

Many records from previous eras were lost. Ship no Fubito Esaka collected what remained from the fire and presented it to Prince Naka no Ōe. [The Emperor] intended to abdicate the throne to Prince Naka no Ōe. However, Prince Naka no Ōe had an elder brother called Prince Furuhito no Ōe. Since it would be improper to ascend the throne bypassing him, Kamatari suggested that it would be appropriate to first have his uncle Prince Karu ascend the throne. Prince Naka no Ōe agreed, saying "That is most reasonable," and immediately ceded the imperial position to Prince Karu. This was also to be ceded to Furuhito. Since Furuhito had been close to Iruka, he grieved over his destruction, declined the throne, and became a monk. As a result, Prince Karu ascended to the throne. This is Emperor Kōtoku. Prince Naka no Ōe later became known as Emperor Tenji. Kamatari is the ancestor of the Fujiwara clan, the Taishokukan. More will be said about this in various places later. The practice of emperors abdicating while still alive began with [Emperor] Kōgyoku.
