同年に右大臣蘇我倉山田麻呂の弟である蘇我日向が讒言を構え、右大臣に逆心があることを奏上した。右大臣に討手が遣わされた。右大臣は少しも官軍に敵対せず、その妻子と共に自害した。その後右大臣に罪がないという証拠が現れたため、日向を筑紫へ遠流した。これにより、巨勢徳太を左大臣とし、大伴長徳を右大臣として、共に大紫という冠を賜った。

In the same year, Soga no Hinata, the younger brother of Right Minister Soga no Kurayamada Maro, fabricated slanderous accusations and reported to the throne that the Right Minister harbored treasonous intentions. Forces were dispatched to attack the Right Minister. The Right Minister did not resist the imperial forces at all and committed suicide together with his wife and children. Later, evidence emerged proving the Right Minister's innocence, so Hinata was exiled to Tsukushi. As a result, Kose no Tokuta was appointed Left Minister and Ōtomo no Nagatoku was appointed Right Minister, both being granted the crown rank called Daishi.
The following year, a white pheasant was presented from Nagato Province. When everyone reported that this was an auspicious event, the Emperor rejoiced and gathered all court officials in the imperial palace to show it to them. The ceremony was like the New Year's court celebration (chōga). The white pheasant was placed on a palanquin, and four courtiers were made to carry it from the courtyard up to the palace hall. The Left and Right Ministers received it and placed it before the Emperor. Immediately the era name was changed to Hakuchi (White Pheasant).
