(Regarding affairs in Kyoto and Osaka)
We write to inform you of the following. On the eighth of last month, one Chinese vessel ran aground and drifted ashore at Kishiura within our domain. The permanent garrison of Himeshima [定番] was dispatched to stand guard, and from the castle town as well, guards and various officials were promptly sent out in the customary manner. Upon communicating with [the crew] by written exchange [筆談], it was ascertained that the vessel was a ship from Batavia [咬𠺕吧], bound for Nagasaki for the purpose of trade, and that it had been driven ashore by unfavorable winds and waves on the open sea. They reported a crew of sixty-five persons. This matter has been reported to the Nagasaki Magistrate's Office [長崎御奉行所], and upon receiving instructions therefrom, the plan is to escort the vessel to Nagasaki with guards accompanying them. We ask that you please formally notify the officials on your end of this matter, following established precedent as communicated from here. The details of the oral statement [口上] have been sent under separate cover.
Respectfully submitted,
Eighth month, twelfth day The Council of Chief Retainers
To the Accounts Magistrate [
Lord Takaya Kahei
To the Osaka Warehouse Agent [
Lord Ogawa Danemon
Regarding the above matter, it is noted [in a communication dated the twentieth of the eighth month] that the notification was duly made to the Town Magistrate of the Castle Guard's Jurisdiction
