一、私どもに限っては貢物の掛かりはなく、また村役人のようなところで人別改めがあり、その節、十五歳以上の者は銀銭一枚ずつを役人へ差し出す作法であるが、これらの

One entry: From that time on, the two brothers — (marginal note: referring to both Denzō and Goemon) — were placed under the care of a person called "Tsuwana." The lord of an island called "Kinkakewori" came to this place on an inspection tour from the harbor of "Hanaro," lodged at the house of "Tsuwana," and summoned the brothers before him to inquire about their circumstances and livelihood. They explained what had transpired and requested that, if at all possible, they be allowed to farm the land and, in between farming, to engage in fishing.
【Left folio】
Their request was granted, and the lord gave instructions to "Tsuwana" before departing. Thereafter, they received an allotment of land from "Tsuwana," and the two brothers agreed together to build a house on a vacant plot by the shore, and there they engaged in farming and fishing. They fashioned their fishing gear in the same manner as they had used when fishing at Usa-ura, and caught a great many bonito (katsuo). Even while the local people continued to fish, there were times when they caught as many as forty-five. The crops here consisted entirely of varieties of taro and sweet potato.
One entry: For our group alone, there was no levy of tribute. There was also a census-like inspection conducted at the village headman's office, at which time those aged fifteen and above were required to present one silver coin each to the official. However, as for these...
