(Continued from previous page) They were given a small amount of dried meat resembling roasted sweet potatoes to eat, but as they were very hungry, they indicated they wished to eat more. They were firmly restrained from doing so. They later learned that this was because people who have been starving can die suddenly if they eat too much all at once. They also learned that the ship had originally come to the island not knowing there were any castaways there — it had come for fishing along the rocky shore, and happened to spot what appeared to be human heads (shadows?), and approached to investigate. One account: This ship was a whaling vessel from "Massachusetts" in North America, and the ship's master was named "Fitchsen" (Fitchen?). From there, they conducted whaling operations in various locations and caught fifteen large whales, extracted the oil, and discarded the meat into the sea. Toward the end of the eleventh month, they arrived at the port of "Hanalono" (Honolulu) on the island of "Uwaho" (Oahu), one of the "Sandwich" Islands. This port was one frequented by ships of all nations. There was a person there who had come from North America and held a position resembling that of a magistrate, named "Dafuta Kyōchi" (Doctor Cooke?). At the request of "Fitchsen," this person arranged for Denzō and the other four to go ashore. The official brought a map and inquired eagerly about various locations, but none of the five could make sense of the map at all. (It appeared as though the castaways were) pressing their hands together in prayer as if before the gods and Buddha... (continues)
