**[Right folio]** When they mimicked such gestures, the official-like person brought out and showed them one Japanese ichibu silver coin (20 pieces), one nibu silver coin, one mon copper coin, and one Japanese-made kiseru (pipe). They responded by hand gestures that these were all items from their homeland, and it appeared that the official was now convinced they were indeed Japanese. They later learned that these items had been kept since fourteen years prior, when an Osaka merchant vessel had drifted to this place. Once the inquiry was concluded, each of them received a silver coin called a "hasdara." As for Manjiro, the ship's captain Whitfield wished to take him back to his home country, and when he made this request, **[Left folio]** the official replied that it was up to Manjiro's own wishes. He told the four remaining men that Manjiro would be well looked after and that they need not worry in the least, after which Manjiro was put aboard the whaling ship and they set sail. At this time, Manjiro was fourteen years old. One item: The four men—Jusuke, Gozaemon, Denzo, and Toraemon—were placed in the care of a "Ryochi" (a person of lower official rank), and received various assistance from him, but as they could not communicate in language, they spent their days in emptiness. By the beginning of summer of the following year of the Tiger, they gradually began to learn words and roughly memorized the names of various objects. Feeling guilty for having received such prolonged care, they resolved to contribute through appropriate work…
